MONSTA X Minhyuk and IM participated in an interview and photo shoot for Vogue!
In the interview, IM spoke about attending award ceremonies amid the COVID-19 pandemic. In 2020, year-end ceremonies took place without a personal audience and included recorded performances, participants wearing masks and often receiving the award via video message. IM said: “We were grateful to have won prizes, but when the fans aren’t there in person, the trophies feel less meaningful.”
Like many artists, MONSTA X had to cancel their concerts abroad due to the pandemic. “It was the first time since my debut that I had spent so much time in bed that my back hurt,” he said. “Aside from training at home, I spent most of the time in the gym. Even when I was busy, I went to the studio when I could. But now I have a lot of time. ”
IM plans to release its first official solo album in February. He said, “I want to show the public what kind of music I make. The album is about the concept of ‘dualism’ that I’ve been thinking about a lot lately. You know this idea when you are okay but you are not feeling well? I can’t always smile, but I have a job that makes me smile. I want to talk about these contradicting, dualistic aspects. ”
He continued, “It’s not very bright music, but it’s the own color of ‘IM’. The members heard it and said, half-jokingly, that it was good but likely not to appeal to the public. I think the public are looking for a cute idol concept then they will be surprised. I like it when people say, ‘IM doing this kind of music?’ “He added that he wasn’t worried about the album and always had faith in his music.
Minhyuk was asked about his choice of songs during his time Appearance on MBCs “The king of mask singers. “The songs he selected were from 1989 and 1991, and while ‘retro’ is a current trend, the songs came out before Minhyuk was born. He explained, “In my house we had a record player that did both I heard a lot of different albums as a kid. I remember the album cover of Im Chang Jung that came out when he was seven. He dyed his hair blonde and held his arms up to the sky”. He added added that he often asked his parents to buy him albums instead of toys.
Minhyuk was also asked about his work as an MC on SBS’s “Inkigayo” and Naver NOW’s “Bogo Ship Show” (literal title). “Bogo Ship Show” is a radio broadcast in streaming video format. As a DJ, Minhyuk invites musicians to talk about various topics. He said, “From a listener’s point of view, I think it’s good to have a DJ who speaks honestly about things even when it’s not on the script.” He said that it always takes at least 30 minutes to look up articles about a guest beforehand, stating, “It would be rude to speak to someone without knowing anything about them just because they are a new artist. For example, the group DRIPPIN recently got on the show and I didn’t know much about them, but I looked them up beforehand and the conversation became a lot easier. When Jaejae got on the show, I mentioned that I had seen an article about her branding modeling and she was really happy to hear that. The guest has to be excited for the show to go well. ”
Minhyuk chose Kim Junsu as his favorite guest and said, “As soon as he saw me, he said, ‘Oh! I don’t know if you will feel bad hearing this, but I think your voice sounds similar to mine. I almost suffocated. I used to be unsure about my delicate voice, but I was hopeful when I saw him sing. When I was young I thought that only men with deep and masculine voices like SG Wannabe could become singers. But Kim Junsu showed me how other singing styles can be successful. Of course, he looks good and dances well too. ”
