Millions of viewers watched SM Entertainments SMTOWN LIVE “Culture humanity” Online concert yesterday!
On January 1, SM Entertainment hosted a star-studded free online concert with performances by many of their artists, including Aespa, red velvet, NCT dream, NCT 127, NCT U, WayV, EXO‘s Baekhyun, EXOs Kai, SHINee‘s Taemin, Girls Generation Taeyeon, SuperM, Super junior, TVXQ and HOT’s Kangta.
An astonishing number of viewers of the SMTOWN LIVE concert streamed the free event which recorded an impressive 35.83 million streams from 186 different countries. This set a new record for the highest number of spectators that a Korean online concert has ever reached.
Lee Sung Soo and Tak Young Joon, Co-CEO of SM Entertainment, explained why they decided to make the concert available for free: “K-pop is not just music, but also a part of people’s lives and a medium through which we communicate and share our feelings. As we bid farewell to 2020, which has been a difficult year because of the COVID-19 pandemic, we wanted to cheer on K-pop fans around the world who are going through tough times [this year]So we have prepared this free concert in the hope of bringing them bright energy and hoping for a better future. ”
