On November 25th, the upcoming TVN drama “Awaken” Held an online press conference with Namgoong Min, AOAs Seolhyun, Lee Chung Ah, Yoon Sun Woo and director Kim Jung Hyun.
“Awaken” is a crime drama that traces the connection between mysterious events in the present and the secrets of an enigmatic incident in a village 28 years ago.
At the press conference, director Kim Jung Hyun shared his reasons for casting these actors. He said, “As they say, Namgoong Min is an actor that you can trust. There are several times when I feel like an audience on set. A script is just words, and what kind of character is born depends on what kind of actor is playing the role. I was so curious to see what kind of Do Jung Woo would be born through Namgoong Min’s acting. ”
He continued, “When I first met Seolhyun, I knew I wanted her to play Gong Hye Won. She is careful with her seniors and doesn’t talk a lot, but once the cameras start rolling she is full of energy. I think people can look forward to her seeing her work. ”
Of Lee Chung Ah, he said, “She played a lot of soft and cute characters, and I wanted to break that mold. I knew she could show another side of her and she did a very good job of playing a cold, logical and rational character. But she also showed a lovably awkward side. ”
He continued, “Yoon Sun Woo is a character with many secrets. I can’t tell you all of them, but you can see his secrets in his eyes. I could feel that he had thought a lot about the character from the start. I was surprised at how good he was, and I think viewers can look forward to seeing him take on the role of the moon Jae Woong. ”
Namgoong Min said, “I am always very worried and pressured about what my next project will be. Other than that, I have my own standards for selecting projects. I was determined to do some fresh and fun drama instead of worrying about choosing a project that would be as successful as my last one. ”
He added, “When I first came across this drama, it felt different from other mystery projects. It had some fresh elements. It’s not just about catching the criminal or finding out the clue, there are also many emotional elements. I wanted to challenge a new kind of genre that had never been played in drama before. ”
Seolhyun said, “I went to action school two months before shooting started to learn how to film stunt scenes. It wasn’t that I didn’t do any action scenes before, but it was mostly archery and other weapons. This time I learned hand-to-hand combat. I’ve learned to hit, kick, twist and roll with my whole body. ”
She continued, “There are similarities and differences between me and Hye Won. I speak quite slowly and think a lot before I act. Hye Won reacts with her body first and she starts quickly. For this reason, I also tried very hard to assert myself quickly. ”
Lee Chung Ah said, “She has a far more impressive summary than I do. It was very difficult to play a character who can speak two foreign languages. Fortunately, the script came out early and I had plenty of time to practice. There weren’t many English scenes, thank god. ”
She continued: “Because she is a criminal psychologist, she has a different perspective than other people. I have studied how real criminal profilers conduct interviews and read many books on criminal psychology and human behavior. ”
Yoon Sun Woo’s character, Moon Jae Woong, is a hacker on a large Korean portal called MODU. He said, “I’ve thought a lot about the personality of my character. He is very good at computers, but is an outsider in his daily life. I thought a lot about why he felt excluded from society, as well as his mental state and trauma. I had the feeling that in his mental state he would exhibit unusual behavior and speech patterns, so I thought about it a lot. ”
“Awaken” premieres November 30th at 9pm KST and is available on Viki.
